Q. When Should the Battery be Replaced?

A. Generally, a car battery lasts for about three years. Be sure to have it checked out or replaced if the battery light on the dashboard is illuminated, the engine is slow to start, or the battery is showing signs of leaking or corrosion. To help boost your battery's lifespan, try to make a habit of shutting off the headlights when you're in the car but not driving. It's also a good idea to have it examined every time you bring in your vehicle for an oil change.

Q. How Often Should I Have My Car's Oil Changed?

A. Exactly how long your vehicle should go between oil changes depends on the type of oil that's flowing through the engine. If your vehicle is older, there's a good chance it runs on conventional oil. If that's the case, it's recommended to change the oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If you drive a newer car that uses synthetic oil, you'll want to make sure it gets switched out somewhere between 5,000 and 7,500 miles. If you notice the engine running louder than usual, a burning odor, or knocking or clicking sounds, have a certified technician check it out immediately.

Q. When Do I Replace the Brake Pads?

A. If you spend a lot of time driving in the city with stop-and-go traffic, it's a good idea to have the brake pads switched out every 30,000 to 35,000 miles. If you do a lot of highway driving, pads are more likely to last around 80,000 miles.

Q. Is it Time for a Tire Rotation?

A. Tires should be rotated every 5,000 miles or so. Rotations are important because they help the tires last longer by promoting balanced wear and tear across the surface of each one.
